Spatial Variability of Soil Properties as Affected by Flood Spreading in Gharacharyan Plain

Abstract:   (13516 Views)
Differences in sedimentation in the flooded plains may cause spatial soil variability. Thus, the study was carried out to investigate the spatial variations of soil properties in Gharacharyan plain, north-west of Zanjan. Three flooded areas and one control area were selected for soil sampling. Eight grids in the flooded plains (flooded spreading area) and three grids in the control area were considered for soil sampling. Three profiles were dug in each grids and soil samples were taken from three depths (0-20, 20-40, and 40-560 cm) in each profile. Spatial variability of soil properties was analyzed using the geostatistics method. The Kriging was used for interpolation of soil properties values in the area. Results indicated that amounts of silt, clay, bulk density, electrical conductivity, potassium and bicarbonate in the flooded plains were lower than theirs amounts in the control area. Nevertheless, amounts of sand, porosity, infiltrability, available water, acidity, organic matter, lime, and nitrogen declined in the flooded areas. Available water, nitrogen, potassium and bicarbonate spatially varied in the area with an effective range of 513, 455, 433, and 407 m, respectively. Variogram of available water was modeled as exponential function and variograms of nitrogen, potassium and bicarbonate were determined as spherical models. Amounts of available water and nitrogen contrary to potassium and bicarbonate remarkably increase from north-west to south of the area. Spatial variation map of the soil properties can be reliably used to effective management of floods in the plains.
