Regional frequency analysis of maximum daily rainfall in the Caspian Sea southern coasts by fuzzy clustering

The regional frequency analysis is one of the methods to estimate maximum daily rainfall in the regions where no data is available. Cluster analysis is used to identify the hydrologically homogeneous regions in regional studies. In this study, fuzzy cluster analysis was applied to identify the hydrologically homogeneous regions in the southern coast of the Caspian Sea (Golestan, Mazandaran and Gilan provinces). The homogeneity of each region identified by cluster analysis was checked by Hosking-Wallis heterogeneity measures. Then some options were proposed for adjusting the regions to improve their homogeneity. Eventually, the best regional distribution was selected based on the goodness of fit test and the distribution parameters of maximum daily rainfall were estimated by L-moment method.
